Since its launch in the year 2001, the Honda Activa has grown leaps and bounds. This 2-wheeler has captured the scooter market and how! It solves the regular basic needs of a modern nuclear family. Now in 2018, the Active comes in the 5G avatar which is more modern. The fresh looks are enhanced by the introduction of the new LED headlight, new instrument cluster, funky new colour schemes and a new 5G badge.

The Activa 5G comes with funky colour options

Styling – In its 5th iteration, the changes are mainly cosmetic updates. In the upfront now its get a LED headlight and Activa 5G badging on either side of the body. The new funky colour options are making the scooter even more appealing. It now gets some chrome treatment both in the front and back. Apart from the above rest all in the styling department is carried from the previous 4G version.

The instrument cluster is an analog-digital unit

Instrument Cluster and Switchgear – There is a major update in the instrument cluster. The cluster is now a dual analogue and digital unit, where the speed is indicated by an analogue meter and rest of the information is provided in the digital console. The digital meter and key slot are the same as in the Honda Grazia and also there is no update in the switchgear or with its quality.

The seat of the Activa 5G is placed at a height of 765 mm

Ergonomics – The seat of the Honda Activa 5G at 765 mm is the most accessible scooter seat. There is no update in ergonomics since 2009. The handlebar positioning gives an upright riding posture. There is an ample amount of footboard space between your legs for backpack luggage and hooks are also provided for your daily groceries. The seat is large enough to accommodate two average sized people. The positioning of the foot pegs is placed ergonomically to comfort the pillion.

The Activa 5G has a top speed of about 85 km/hr

Performance – The Honda Activa 5G is powered by the same 109cc HET motor which produces 8 BHP and 9 Nm of torque. The numbers on paper are not that appealing but when you start riding you can feel that the motor is quite punchy at the low end. The scooter maxes out its speed at 85 km/hr. The refinement and reliability doesn't need to be questioned as it’s a Honda. The motor is tuned perfectly for daily city commute as well as occasional highway rides.

The Activa comes with Combi-Braking System (CBS)

Riding Dynamics – With no changes to the ergonomics, the Activa is comfortable but the ride quality hasn’t improved because it carries the same suspension setup which does an excellent job of absorbing our city bumps. The scooter rides over the worst of road conditions but the front suspension feels bottomed out while the rear feels too bouncy when with a pillion. The combi-braking system does the braking job brilliantly and is a lifesaver in heavy panic braking situations.

The Activa is the highest selling scooter in India

Verdict – The Honda Activa 5G is an excellent package. The scooter is balanced as it does not have any unappealing points nor some out-of-the-world features. With this 5th generation, we'd have liked some more updates to keep up with newer competition in the market. However, the HondaActiva will continue to be the most popular scooter and it is unlikely that its sales numbers will fall any time soon.
